FRIKES harbour, village and beach in ITHAKI (ITHACA)
Frikes is a small cute coastal village located on the Eastern side of the island. It has a nice beach, 4-5 tavernas, coffee shops a small super market and a bar (open only in peak season). It is connected through ferry with Vassiliki port (Lefkada) and is popular among boaters.....According to a few scientists it is considered to be the Homeric harbour of ‘Reithrou’.....It has about 35 inhabitants and is located 19km from Vathi (port and capital, see separate listing) and 5km from Stavro. The village has been there since the sixteenth century and was created by the inhabitants of the surrounding mountains in order for them to have access to the sea and carry out their trade.....A site worth seeing are the two well kept windmills located on each side of the harbour.....The local fiesta takes place on the 20th of June
It is quite protected and safe as a harbour but strong southerly winds may cause a problem. Furthermore the swell from the ferry coming from Vassiliki and another big swell that passes 3-4 times daily, caused by a large ferry miles away may also cause severe damage. The best berths are on the quay as the floating pontoons are subjected to the wash from the ferries. Water and electricity on the quay.
Frikes has a nice beach with trasparent waters and shade (from the mountain), lying at a stretch just before the settlement.
