VAGIONIA (BARBARIA) beach, anchorage & historic site in POROS

Vagonia or Barbaria is a deep, picturesque and protected cove found on the norteastern coast of Poros island. It has a beach with large peebles on the sea bottom, sand with small peebles on the shore and very clear waters. A cantina is found on the beach offering a few umbrellas and sunbeds for rent (summertime only). On the east of the main beach there is a smaller one which also has clear waters, rocks and nice peebles. Both are ideal for snoreklling. The waters drop off quite deep from the shore.

The area is verdant surrounded by many kinds of trees.There are only a few houses around and no other facilties are available near by. The beach is exposed to northern - norteastern winds but it is calm with all other winds.

There is no bublic transportation to Vagionia. You can reach it only by a private boat, a private vehicle or a taxi. There are two ways to reach Vagionia from Poros town/port. One is through Neorion, Love Bay and the Russian Dockyard and the other through Askeli. We suggest that you arrive through the one road and return through the other. This way you will have the chance to make a tour of the island which is definitely one of the best things to do in Poros. The drive is stunning, passing through virgin pine forests and offering great views. On the road to Vagionia (as you come from Askeli) you will pass by the archaeological site of ancient Kalavria and Poseidon's Temple.

HISTORY: Under the sea, on the northern side, visitors may still see the ruins of an ancient town's roads and houses. It is not known exactly when the town was sunk. It is known however, that the ancient port of Kalavria used to be there. That was the port of the Macedonians fleet, when their leader Antipatros came, in order to arrest Demosthenis, who had found shelter at the Sanctuary of Poseidon.

ANCHORING INFO: Vagonia or Barbaria bay, is a deep and well protected cove from all winds except the north - norteastern. The coasts from the “Bisti” cape to the anchorage of "Vagiona" are 8.075m long. A small cantina is available on the beach, which is open only during the day time (summer only). No other facilities around.
